Asscher cut diamonds are a beautiful example of an emerald cut type diamond, the term “Asscher” is not used in the certification of this diamond type by the GIA. The correct discsription of the cut is in fact ” Square Emerald Cut”.
An emerald cut with a ratio of 1:1 to the eye ( the same length as width ) will meet the parameters for this cut type. As with all diamonds the cut can vary in some major ways, being deep with a high crown or shallow with a flat crown, table diameter and girdle thickness can also vary.
Careful selection helps to rule out the extremes, as a well balanced cut will have a better play of light and sparkle than the less well proportioned poorly cut options. There is also a variance in what is called the “Windmill” some are broad and others thin and narrow. The windmill effect is created by the beveled corner facets running from the girdle down to the culet, so it is the facets on the back corners. If you look at the diamond on the left you can see this quite clearly, like the sails of a windmill.
The diamond at left was used in a clients ring; E5140, it is a 1.51 D/VS2.
