The Round Brilliant cut diamond is the most popular of all the diamond types, this in the main is for two very good reasons. Firstly it is the most versatile and can be set into many many differing designs, because it has no corners around the girdle ( outer edge ), there are very few restriction on where the diamond can be held in place. This gives jewellers and ring designers far more options when it comes to claw placement and setting construction.
The second reason is that from a technical perspective the round brilliant is also the best cut to maximise the brilliance of the diamond crystal. The best examples being the “Excellent” and “Ideal” cut grades, terms used by the GIA and AGS respectively among others of the grading certification labs.
This “Excellent” cut is a term that the GIA specifically use to describe a diamond that has been cut to and conforms with the GIA’s highest recommendation for optomising the refractive qualities of the diamond whilst retaining the maximum physical diameter without compromising the cut.
The GIA has some tollarence for the diamonds grade to fall within, so not all “Excellent” cut diamonds will be exactly the same in every respect, however all must meet the very tight parameters of the minimum cut grading system in the Excellent cut standard.
Mathematically perfect diamonds in the round brilliant are in fact seldom cut, as cutters would need to have cut the diamonds outer edge , called the girdle, down to a zero thickness. This of course would be susceptible to damage. Cutters will normally give a well cut diamond a girdle that is around 3 % thick, that is to say it is 3 % of the diamonds total.
The round brilliant cut is the moist exacting of all cuts when done to the highest levels however just because a diamond is round in shape does not mean that it is the best, many poorly cut round brilliant diamond are out there.
The very best of the Excellent cut grade diamonds will show a hearts and arrows pattern, particularly when viewed with a H&A scope, you can see the arrows part of this in a well cut diamond if you look closely with the naked eye, it is also visible in many of the rings on this site, for example in the banner section at the top of each ellissi page, the cluster ring at the center, you can see the 8 pointed star with its arrows pointing outward. the Hearts effect is viewed from the back of the diamond. These are an alignment of facets that is an illusion created from reflections within the diamond, however this only occurs if the diamond is of the highest cut standards

Diamonds weighing 0.50 ct or over are accompanied with certification from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Diamonds ranging in size from 0.20 ct - 0.49 ct can also be certified. GIA Certification
In addition to the GIA certification, all our diamond rings are accompanied with a full independent Valuation by a valuer registered with the National Council of Jewellery Valuers. This is an impartial assessment of the quality of the diamonds and ring. This NCJV document provides you with a figure for the retail replacement value of the ring for insurance purposes, it is also an independent third party assessment of the ring.
